To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, EDGAR DUERR, a subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of Bella Vista, Langham Road, Bowdon, in the county of Chester, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rifle Attachments, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to rifles adapted to be fired by the aid of periscope attachments, and has for its object to provide an improved device for loading said rifles and for discharging used cartridge cases therefrom, such device being capable of operation from the position occupied by the user when employing the periscope, so that the rifle need not be moved from the firing position and the user need not expose himself.

Heretofore devices for the aforesaid object have been proposed; such devices have, howeveigbeen more or less complicated in construction and therefore, owing to the rough usage to which they may be subjected, are liable to be readily put out of etficient service.

A loading device for attachment made in accordance with my invention is simple in construction, has a minimum of parts, can be quickly attached to the rifle and detached therefrom without the employment of any special tools and does not unduly interfere with the use of the rifle when sighted and used in the ordinary way from the shoulder.

My invention comprises the combination with a lever extending downward below the rifle butt to a position for the convenient manipulation of its lower end by the operator when looking into the periscope, of a rod-like part attached to the rifle bolt operating arm and extending to the rear of the rifle barrel, so operatively connected to said lever that the movement of the latter about its pivot imparts to said rod both a longitudinal and a rotary movement for the well known purpose of loading the rifle and for discharging the used cartridge case.

My invention further comprises the combination with a rod attached to the rifle bolt operating arm and extending to the rear of the rifle barrel, of one or more spiral grooves formed upon said arm or a part secured thereon, and an operating lever pivoted about the rifle butt or a part attached thereto, the said lever carrying a sleeve having one or more projecting worm-like Specification of Letters Patent.

Referring to the accompanying explanatory drawings Figure 1 is a view showing part of a rifle fitted with a periscope and also my improved loading device or attachment.

Fig. 2 is an end view of the parts shown in Fig. l but with the periscope removed.

The same reference letters in the two views indicate the same parts.

It will be understood that my improved rifle loading device may be applied to a rifle having any convenient form of periscope attachment thereon.

The loading device comprises a lever a pivoted at 6 upon the metal strap 0 which is clamped upon the rifle but-t. The said lever extends up on both sides of the butt and carries at its upper end a sleeve 01 working over the rod 6 which is secured at f to the ordinary arm 9 of the rifle bolt. The upper part f is made as a ball socket, to engage the ball end of said arm 9 and allow of relative movements between them. The part of the rod e which works within the sleeve (1 is thickened or has a part of larger external diameter secured thereon which has two spiral grooves it cut therein and the sleeve has corresponding spiral projecting ribs or wormlike parts formed therein, so that movement of the lever a about its pivot I) results in a rotary movementof the rod 0. When the latter has turned to such an extent as to place it in its extreme unlocked position, further movement of the lever a, being unable to cause a further rotary movement of the rod 6, gives to the latter alongitudinal movement due to the binding of the spiral grooves and projections upon one another. By this means, the barrel is opened and the spent cartridge discharged therefrom in the ordinary manner. For closing the barrel, the lever a is moved in a reverse direction and the rod 6 is moved longitudinally until it arrives at the end of its traverse when it is free to turn. The spiral grooves and projections then cause the rotation of the arm 9 and the locking of the barrel in its closed position.
