Abstract

1,155,909. Measuring power electrically. INSTITUT FUR SCHIFFBAU. July 12, 1967, No. 32108/67. Heading GIN. Each cylinder 1 of an I. C. engine has an associated Piezo-electric pressure transducer 2, and the power output of a cylinder is determined by connecting its transducer 2 via a switch 5 to an integrating amplifier 13, an inverter 12 being included in the amplifier input by operation of contact 6" of a relay 6 during piston movement in one direction, and not included during piston movement in the other direction. The amplifier output thus represents the difference between the integrals of two successive portions of the pressure/time characteristics of the cylinder, and is said to be proportional to the area of the closed loop curve which would show pressure against piston displacement, and which is related to power output. The relay 6 is operated by whichever of the switch arms 3 has been selected by the switch 5 to connect a voltage U a to the relay. The switches 3 are cam operated by a cam (4, Fig. 2, not shown) connected to the crank-shaft, one switch 3 corresponding to each cylinder. A stepping switch 7 is stepped one position for each operation of a contact 6' of the relay 6, and opens contacts 8' after a predetermined number of cylinder operations. Actuation of a switch 11 to a position II causes the voltage U a to be supplied to an alternative set of switches 10 operated by a cam 14, each switch 10 again corresponding to a particular cylinder and causing a voltage pulse to be produced at X to trigger a CRT trace. The voltage to be observed on the trace is connected to terminal Y via switch 11 from the desired transducer 2. The relay 6 is now inoperable and no power reading is obtainable, but instead a pressure/time curve is observable on the CRT.
