Abstract

1,155,595. Synthetic magnesium lithium silicates, and dispersions thereof. LAPORTE INDUSTRIES Ltd. 12 July, 1966 [16 July, 1965[, No. 30359/65. Addition to 1,054,111. Heading C1A. A composition comprises the synthetic clay mineral in which M is a Cation, x is >0 but <6, y has a value from 1 up to but excluding 4 and n is an integer from 1-3; and up to 25% by weight of the clay of one or more peptizing agents selected from the alkali metal salts having polyvalent cations which cations form complex or insoluble salts with magnesium. Preferably, M is Ma or Li<SP>+</SP> and the amount of peptizing agent is from 3-12% by weight. Preferred peptizing agents are tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate and sodium metaphosphate. When " M " is Ma<SP>+</SP> or Li<SP>+</SP>, the composition on mixing with water so that the total solids content is up to 20% by weight, produces a colloidal sol. These sols are suitable media for emulsion paints, when mixed with suitable additives.
