Abstract

1,146,245. Thinning of dispersions. HENKEL & CIE G.m.b.H. 27 Jan., 1967 [29 Jan., 1966], No. 4114/67. Heading C1A. Aqueous inorganic dispersions are thinned by adding a mixture of an alkali metal silicate and a water-soluble salt of an aminopolyphosphonic acid of formula in an amount of 0À01 to 0À8% by weight of the dispersion, wherein R 1 and R 2 represent the residues and R 1 and R 2 may be the same or different, R 3 is the same as R 1 or R 2 or a hydrogen atom, an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms or a hydroxy-alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, and R 4 and R 5 represent hydrogen atoms or an alkyl radical of 1 to 4 carbon atoms, the proportion by weight of alkali metal silicate to aminophosphonic acid salt amounting from 20:1 to 2:1. The preferred mixture comprises an alkali metal silicate and a salt of an aminotri-(methylenephosphonic). In the examples, the following aminophosphonic components are added with the alkali metal silicates, in some cases as a mixed crystallizate, to dispersions of fire clay, china clay and chalk:-(1) the penta-sodium salt of amino tri-(methylenephosphonic acid), (2) the sodium salt of ethylenediamine tetra- (methylenephosphonic acid), (3) the sodium salt of monoethanol aminodi-(methylenephosphonic acid), (4) the sodium salt of diethylene triaminopenta-(methylenephosphonic acid), (5) the sodium salt of aminotri-(isopropylenephosphonic acid) and (6) the sodium salt of ethylene diaminotetra-(ethylidenephosphonic acid).
