Abstract

1408266 Refractory moulds IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 5 Oct 1972 [19 Oct 1971] 48575/71 Heading C1J [Also in Divisions B5 and C3] An investment casting mould is made by coating a pattern with a thixotropic mixture comprising a refractory material, a binder, a liquid dispersant for the binder, and a thickening agent (to impart thixotropicity) which requires a shear stress of at least 1000.dynes/cm.<SP>2</SP> (preferably at least 3000) to break its structure from solid to liquid, the mixture being vibrated for at least some of the time that the pattern is immersed in it. Preferably the vibration is such as to reduce to viscosity in the vicinity of the pattern to 10-25 poises and additionally the pattern is oscillated. A conventional fine-grain primer coating may be applied first followed by a stucco coat and one or more thixotropic coats. Any suitable thickening agent may be used, e.g. fumed silica or treated clays such as beneficiated hydrous magnesium silicate and a small amount of dispersing agent, e.g. diethanolamine may be added. The refractory material is preferably a powder, 50% of which has a particle size below 0À15 mm. Examples given include silicates, clays, oxides and many other refractory materials of the kind used in investment casting. Airdrying binders are preferred, e.g. alkyl silicates, alkali-metal silicates, silica sols. aluminium oxychloride, aluminium phosphate, gypsumsilica mixes and hydraulic cements. The liquid dispersant is preferably a solvent for the binder and may be a polar solvent; examples given include water, mineral acids, alcohols, glycols and glycol ethers.
