Abstract

Novel mixtures of aromatic polyanhydrides wherein the individual anhydrides can be represented by the formula PaBb, where P represents a radical derived by the loss of one or more hydrogen atoms from the nucleus of the phthalic anhydride molecule. B represents a radical derived by the loss of two or more hydrogen atoms from the benzene molecule and a and b are integers, are prepared by a process comprising the gradual addition of a benzene disulphonyl halide, preferably benzene metadisulphonyl chloride, to phthalic anhydride, using at least 1À5 and preferably 2 to 20 moles of anhydride per mole of benzene disulphonyl halide, under conditions such that SO 2 and a hydrogen halide are evolved and at temperatures preferably in the range 200-350‹ C., but possibly as high as 400‹ C., and removing any unchanged phthalic anhydride from the reaction mixture. The process may be performed in the presence of a catalytic amount of copper or a compound containing copper. The overall ratio of P: B units is generally 1: 2 to 2: 1 or preferably 1:1 to 2:1. In the simplest instance the composition of the invention is a mixture of isomeric terphenyl tetracarboxylic dianhydrides of the formula These mixtures are valuable as starting materials in the production of condensation polymers.
