Abstract
1,155,409. Laminates. NATIONAL RESEARCH CORP. 24 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 37952/66. Heading B5N. A thermal insulating product comprising a pair of plastics films and thin vacuum-deposited layers of metal supported on the plastics films with the metal layers facing each other is characterized in that a layer of reinforcing fibres is sandwiched between and adhesively united to the metal faces of the plastics films while at least one of the plastics films has a transmission in excess of 80% for infra-red radiation in the range of 80,000-90,000 angstroms. The fibres are inextensible fibres of high density material, e.g. non-woven glass fibres, and are arranged straight and in varied directions. Each fibre preferably consists of a number of monofilaments. The fibres are coated with adhesive so that, under pressure, they are united to the metallized plastics films, the remaining portions of the films being spaced apart. The air cells so formed may be enlarged by previous embossing of the films. Preferably the films are vacuumaluminized polyethylene. If a degree of bulkiness is required the adhesive may comprise polyurethane foam which is created between the layers thus bonding the layers to each other and to the fibre layer. In alternative embodiments the films may be of polypropylene or polyethylene terephthalate. They may be metallized on both sides and the fibres may be made of nylon. Quantitative examples are given.
