Abstract

1,154,754. Cutting tool insert. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 6 Feb., 1967 [24 March, 1966], No. 5522/67. Heading B3T. An invertible and indexable cutting insert comprises a pair of spaced substantially parallel sides 30, 32 with a peripheral surface disposed therebetween constituted by a plurality of flat edge surfaces 34, 36, some of the junctures of which, with the parallel sides defining straight cutting edges 38, 40, and 42, 44, both of the parallel sides 30, 32 having a flat planar recess 46, 52 which extends between raised portions 48, 50 and 54, 56 of the sides respectively. The raised portions of the sides include a flat surface which is perpendicular to its associated edge surface. Alternatively, the flat surface may extend from the cutting edge towards the recess at an acute angle to the recess. In the embodiment in Fig. 4 (not shown) the insert has cutting edges formed at all of the junctures between the flat edge surfaces and the parallel sides. The insert in cross-section perpendicular to a cutting edge is substantially H-shaped.
