Abstract
1,154,492. Coating by vapour deposition. UNITED STATES STEEL CORP. June 20, 1966 [July 16, 1965], No. 27495/66. Heading C7F. A strip is fed to and removed from a vapour deposition apparatus through a series of boxes having sealing rollers with separator boxes between, each of the boxes being connected to a vacuum pump. Each roller-box has three rollers 17, 18, 20, the upper roller 20 being adjustable vertically from outside the box through a toggle 23, to keep the pass between the rollers sufficiently small to prevent loss of vacuum whilst not pressing on the strip hard enough to mar it. Entry and exit chutes 29, 20 are mounted on flexible diaphragms 30a and have graphite seals 37 which are urged by springs against the rollers. The end-faces of the rollers also have spring urged graphite or synthetic resin seals Fig. 3 (not shown).
