Abstract
808,208. Coating by vapour deposition. VAC ANSTALT. June 24, 1955 [June 26. 1954; Dec. 23, 1954; Dec. 31, 1955(2)], No. 18374/55. Class 82(2) [Also in Groups XVI and XXXVI] An installation for coating strip material 13, e.g., paper, textile material, gauze or perforated foil, with metal by vapour deposition comprises a number of sections each including a vessel 1...4 mounted on a movable support 9...12, means, e.g., a pump, for establishing a vacuum in the vessel, means for passing the strip 13 through the vessel and for coating the strip, packing between adjacent vessels for sealing the interiors thereof from the atmosphere, partitions 18, Fig. 2, between adjacent vessels having orifices provided with vacuum-tight seals through which the strip 13 passes, and couplings between adjacent sections which permit the sections to be coupled together in any desired sequence. Each vessel 1...4 contains means 5...8 for subjecting the material 13 to a treatment operation, e.g., apart from vapour deposition of metal, heating or cooling of the material 13. and the supports 9...12, which run on rails, carry such auxiliary apparatus as pumps, valves and switches. Equipment in the vessels 1...4 may be supported on frames which pass through the vessel walls, the apertures being suitably sealed. A preliminary vacuum is established in all the vessels 1...4 connected in series by a single pump, adjustments to the vacuum in the different vessels being made by separate pumps to each vessel, the vessels being interconnected through valves in dividing partitions. In passing from one vessel to another. e.g., from vessel 3 to vessel 2, the strip 13 passes between two closely spaced parallel plates or through an orifice 17 in a partition 18 between the two vessels. A vacuumtight seal is provided by passing the strip 13 over a driven roller 15 and beneath an endless belt 20 moving at the same speed as the roller 15, the belt 20 urging the strip 13 into contact with the roller 15. Projections 26, 27 flank the orifice 17 and have respectively an extension 30 and a sealing element 29 The projection 27 may be adjustable, and a spring 25, which may be adjustable, tensions the belt 20. Alternatively, two endless belts may be employed instead of the roller and one belt, and transverse, fabric-covered bars rubbing on the belts and roller may be provided as additional seals. The belts and the roller 15, Which may be adjustably mounted, may have coverings, e.g. of plastic material, to grip the strip 13. Adjacent vessels are coupled together by engaging peripheral portions as indicated in Fig. 1, an inflatable annular packing ring sealing the joint. The vessel in which vapour deposition takes place may have a control window provided interiorly with a pair of relatively fixed, rotatable, apertured discs which permit viewing of the interior of the vessel, but prevent deposition of metal particles on the window.
