1,154,439. Quaternary ammonium derivatives. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 23 May, 1968 [24 May, 1967], No. 24638/68. Heading C2C. [Also in Division D1] A quaternary ammonium compound of the formula in which R is an alkyl radical of 10-14 carbon atoms which may contain up to 2 ether linkages, each ether linkage counting as one carbon atom, Z<SP>1</SP>, Z<SP>2</SP>, Z<SP>3</SP> and Z<SP>4</SP> are methyl radicals and X is chloride, bromide or iodide, suitable for use in softening cellulosic fabrics, is prepared by reacting an alpha olefin R<SP>1</SP>-CH=CH 2 in which R<SP>1</SP> is an alkyl radical of 10-14 carbon atoms, with peracetic acid, and reacting the olefin oxide produced with dimethylamine to produce a tertiary amine which is then reacted with a 1,3-dihalo-2-propanol under alkaline conditions.
