[Also in Division C1] Novel quaternary ammonium salts of the general formula in which R<SP>4</SP> is -CH 2 CH=CH 2 , -CH 2 CH 2 Cl or- -CH 2 CH 2 Br and wherein R<SP>3</SP> is an aliphatic radical of 4 to 6, 8 to 11, 13, 15 or 16 carbon atoms when R<SP>4</SP> is -CH 2 CH = CH 2' or -CH 2 CH 2 Cl or R<SP>3</SP> is a C 3-5 , C 8 , C 9 , C 11 or C 13-16 aliphatic radical when R<SP>4</SP> is -CH 2 CH 2 Br, and Z- is an anion, are prepared by reacting a tertiary amine R<SP>3</SP>N(CH 3 ) 2 with allyl chloride, bromide or iodide or with 1,2-dichloro- or 1,2- dibromoethane. The anion is preferably chloride or bromide. Amongst the compounds prepared are allyldimethyl tetradecylammonium bromide, 2 - bromoethyl - dimethyltetradecylammonium bromide and 2-chloroethyldimethyltetradecylammonium chloride.
