Abstract

1,153,981. Net-like thermoplastic sheets. SMITH & NEPHEW PLASTICS LTD. 30 Jan., 1967 [2 Feb., 1966] No. 4521/66. Headings B5A and B5B. A thermoplastic sheet material, having, in part, an openwork structure, is made by subjecting a predetermined area of a sheet which carries a regularly spaced relief or recessed pattern, or a regularly spaced pattern of perforations, to a stress in two directions simultaneously, while protecting the remainder of the sheet from the effects of the stress. The sheet may be, e.g. polyethylene or polypropylene. The " remainder " of the sheet may be protected by: (a) having no pattern or perforations on it; (b) positioning the remainder in clamps while stretching the sheet; (c) coating it with a surfactant (e.g. in a pattern); (d) laminating it to strips of the same or a different sheet to strengthen it; and (e) forming the sheet so that the remainder is thicker than the areas which are to form the openwork structure. The final sheet may be heat-stabilized.
