Abstract

1,153,120. Reconstituting tobacco. W. D. & H. O. WILLS (AUSTRALIA) Ltd. 11 March, 1968, No. 11861/68. Heading A2C. In a method of producing reconstituted tobacco sheet from tobacco stem by making an aqueous slurry of tobacco stem and subsequently spreading and drying the slurry to form a paper-like material, the stem is pretreated with ammonium sulphate to cause the pectin naturally occurring in the stem to swell. Preferably at least a portion of the treated stem material is treated with an enzyme able to attack the swollen pectin so produced. Preferred enzymes are those produced from fungi of the genera Aspergillus and Penicillium. The pretreatment is effected by heating the stem under pressure in an aqueous solution of the ammonium sulphate, and rejecting the water soluble substances released into the sulphate solution. Wetted tobacco leaf dust and dry tobacco leaf flour may be added to the treated tobacco stem before its final disintegration and wet milling prior to deaeration and drying to form a sheet.
