1,152,882. Perforating film and sheet material; laminates. G. ASHWORTH. 16 Jan., 1967, No. 2193/67. Headings B5A, B5B and B5N. [Also. in Divisions C1 and D1] Thermoplastic sheet material, including woven fabrics, and films, is perforated by the action of fluid jets having a temperature at or above the softening point of the material and a supply pressure of at least 100 p.s.i. The thermoplastic material may be, for example, P.V.C., a polyolefine, a polyester, a polyamide. or an A.B.S. copolymer and may exist, as a single layer or a layer backed by e.g. a fabric or a paper layer. In one embodiment (see Fig. 1, not shown) shee material is passed over a heated roller and then over a cooled roller, jets of fluid from intermittently fed perforated stationary tubes being directed on to the sheet as it passes between the rollers. In a second embodiment (see Fig. 2, not shown) the jets are produced by a series of continuously fed perforated tubes mounted about the periphery of a rotating drum, the jet being directed against the sheet through a cover member having an elongated slot. In a third embodiment a continuously fed longitudinally perforated tube, inside which one of the rotating vanes which periodically cover and close the perforations, is used. The fluid may be a gas such as air, a vapour such as steam, a liquid such as a low viscosity oil or water, or a mixture of these.
