Abstract
1,152,866. Coating apparatus. MONSANTO CHEMICALS Ltd. 12 April, 1967 [7 June, 1966], No. 25337/66. Heading B2L. [Also in Division B5] Apparatus for coating a pattern with slurry and treating the slurry with a gas or vapour to form an investment mould, comprises a box or cage with an opening through which the pattern can pass, and mounting means for the pattern, so that the pattern rests inside the box when the opening is uppermost and hangs outside when the box is inverted. The pattern is coated with slurry while outside the box and treated with gas while resting inside. As shown the pattern 3 is mounted in the box 4. by a "L" shaped arm 5 attached to bar 9 in releasable bearings 10. The arm 5 has a rotatable coupling 110 (not shown) which rests on a stop 11. Channels 12, 13 on the base of the box cooperate with arms or pivoted bar 17 by which means the box is swung into an inverted position adjacent the ends of bars 20, 21. The bar is pushed by a ram (not shown) onto these bars, and the pattern which is hanging down as the box has been inverted is immersed in the slurry bath 23. As the boxes move along rods 20, 21 in the direction shown by arrow (b), the coupling 110 on "L"-shaped arm 5 runs along rail 24 and rotates the pattern. The coupling is frustoconical and the speed of rotation is varied by varying distances of the rail 24 from the pivot 10. The pattern is lifted from the slurry by a rise in rail 24 and is then passed through bath 28 containing a fluidised bed of stucco which further coats the pattern. At the end of the coating stage the box engages arms 29, 30 on pivoted rod 31 and is transferred to rods 32, 33, the pattern re-entering the box during rotation of the pivoted arm. The boxes enter tunnel 34 through a seal and are treated with gas or vapour which enters at 35 and is exhausted through 36 and 37. At the end of the cycle, the pattern may be recycled, and is removed when a sufficiently thick coating has built up. The releasable bearings 10 are preferably formed so that the pattern and arm 5 can be lifted out when the box opening is uppermost, and can only rotate when the box is tilted.
