Abstract

Apparatus for cooling slabs of metal comprises a wheel rotating about a vertical axis, the wheel being located wholly above a tank containing the coolant bath and having suspende from it in the tank a series of angularly spaced cradles into which the slabs may be introduced by suitable means. As shown in Fig. 1 wheel 12 has radial arms 16 having slots through which the slabs 54 <PICT:1108929/C6-C7/1> may be lowered into cradles immersed in the coolant bath. The slabs are brought by conveyer 30 to a turnover device 32 consisting of pivoted arms, which translates the slabs to a vertical position from which they are picked up by clamps suspended from beam 38. One end of the latter is pivoted at 40, while the other is moved by powered rollers along track 46 so that the arm 38 moves between a position immediately above the slab 54 when held vertically in device 32 and a position aligned with a radial arm of wheel 12. In a modification Fig. 6 (not shown) the clamps 34' are movably suspended from a fixed beam 62, one end of which is mounted at the axis of wheel 12.
