Abstract

1,152,472. Valves. P.S.I. Ltd. 8 March, 1967 [8 Dec., 1965], No. 52160/65. Heading F2V. A spool valve has a body comprising a central portion 16 and two end caps 17 made from resilient plastics which close off the end of a bore 14 and form stops for a spool 15, the passageways in the spool being formed by a series of separate axially extending grooves 45 spaced apart circumferentially of the spool. The spool is made from aluminium, which may be anodized, a chromium-plated zinc base alloy, or a metallized plastics, and the grooves 45 are formed by milling or slotting, or during moulding. 0-rings 44 seal the spool between port openings 21 to 25 in the body. The central portion 16 of the body is a plastics moulding, and the three body parts are mounted on a separate base 12 having flow connections therein. The spool 15 can be moved by a solenoid, or a mechanical linkage, or, alternatively by pneumatic pressure connected to tappings 39 and 41. In the latter embodiment tappings 37a, and 38a are drilled prior to use. In Fig. 6, not shown, the end cap (107) is modified to mount a solenoidoperated pilot valve (161), and can be disposed at one or both ends of the central portion. Flow passageways may be formed by recesses in the body, or base, and sealed in various arrangements by rings, e.g. (153), Figs. 8 and 9, not shown, or by drilling the body, e.g. at 53 in Fig. 1. The valves may be connected in banks by tie-rods passed through openings 48 in the base. The base may be mounted on a bracket in which ease the flow ports are formed on the side edges. The base may be omitted and the connections made into the body. In Figs. 10 and 11, not shown, a spool has four grooves (165) separated by axially extending ribs (166).
