Abstract

1,151,821. Polyimide fibres. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 30 Jan., 1968 [30 Jan., 1967], No. 4481/67. Addition to 1,121,325. Heading B5B. Polyamide acid or polyimide fibres or filaments are dry-spun from the aqueous solutions according to Specification 1,121,325 which relates to aqueous solutions of a salt of a polyamide acid with at least the stoichiometric amount of a salt-forming organic base required to neutralize all the free carboxyl groups. "Polyamide acid" is defined as a polycondensate of a diamine and an at least tri-carboxylic acid having at least two of the COOH groups on adjacent carbons wherein only 2 of the carboxyl groups are involved in the polycondensation. Spinning is preferably effected by the procedure of Specification 1,038,738, which gives rise to polyamide-acid fibres which are partially converted to polyimide but still capable of orientation. The filaments may be partially oriented before conversion to polyimide followed by further drawing to the desired full orientation. Full conversion to polyimide may be effected by heat or by chemical conversion.
