Abstract

1,151,781. Photographic direct positive silver salt materials. EASTMAN KODAK CO. April 15, 1966 [April 15, 1965], No. 16507/66. Heading G2C. A photographic direct positive silver salt material is made by forming cores comprising grains of a first light-sensitive silver salt, treating these cores so as to produce in them centres which promote the deposition of photolytic silver, covering the treated cores with a layer of a second light-sensitive silver salt to form a shell and fogging the resulting emulsion before or after coating on a support. Silver salts specified are silver halides, thiocyanate, phosphate, cyanide and carbonate. The cores are treated to produce the deposition centres by fogging by exposure to light or by chemical sensitization with a gold or iridium or other noble metal sensitizer, a sulphur sensitizer or a reduction sensitizer. The finished emulsion may be fogged by exposure to light of high intensity, by sensitizing to fog by the methods given above, by adding thiourea dioxide or by reduction sensitizing by treatment with excess silver nitrate under controlled conditions of pAg and PH. On imagewise exposure and development, the material gives a direct positive image.
