Equipment of relatively great length, such as timber, rails and the like is raised and lowered in a pit shaft in a container which is pivotally suspended eccentrically beneath a mine cage so as to be horizontal at the loading and unloading station and vertical during movement in the shaft. The container comprises a main section B, pivoted about a horizontal axis on a suspension device C which is detachably mounted on rails 24 secured to the bottom of the mine cage 45. The right-hand end of the section B is open and the left-hand end is adapted to be closed by a hinged section A which constitutes the base of the container during movement in the shaft. At the stations, the container rotates between the horizontal and vertical positions under the control of pivoted arms having hooks 37 adapted to engage a projection 11 on the container. In operation, the load is pushed into the container on a trolley 46 and the hinged section A is closed and locked. With the hook 37 engaging the projection 11, the cage and container are raised, thereby causing rotation of the container to the vertical position, Figs. 11, 12 (not shown) and disengagement of the hook. As the container reaches the unloading station, it is engaged by a similar hook and thereby rotated to a substantially horizontal position, Figs. 13-15 (not shown) in which the container is slightly inclined to allow the trolley to run out of the container on to rails at the unloading station. Stops are provided to limit rotation of the container.
