Abstract

1,151,693. Machinery guards. SMC STERLING Ltd. 21 July, 1966 [21 April, 19651, No. 16788/65. Heading F2J. In a guard system for a machine such as a press, including a transparent U-shaped guard 6 hung by pins 6a in slots 6b on a vertically slidable frame 4-3-5 supported and moved by a double-acting pneumatic jack 8, if the guard is impeded while being moved into its protective position in advance of the press ram working stroke, the resulting movement of the guard relative to the frame member 4 actuates micro-switches 10 to stop the machine and return the guard to its " open " position. The rods 3 of the frame slide in fixed tubular guides 2. Compressed air is supplied to one or other end of the jack 8 under the control of a solenoid valve (22) (Fig. 3, not shown) and a solenoid valve (20) controls the supply of compressed air to a clutch-operating cylinder (21) of the machine. When the solenoid (29) of the valve (22) is energized, air is admitted to the jack 8 to raise the guard. A cam on a moving part of the press acts to de-energize the solenoid (29) to allow the guard to descend in advance of the press ram, and re-energizes the solenoid to raise the guard at the end of the working stroke, the operating cycle continuing so long as a foot switch (27) (Figs. 2, 4, not shown) is closed. Micro-switches 10 are in series with the foot switch (27). A pressure switch 16 in the pneumatic system opens to cut off the electric supply when the air pressure is below a predetermined value.
