Abstract
1293570 Microtomes INCENTIVE RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT A B 16 Dec 1969 [16 Dec 1968] 61334/69 Heading G2J In a microtome comprising a specimen holder 8 for a specimen 9, which reciprocatingly moves relative to a knife 7, a tape 18 passes above the specimen and is pressed against the specimen during cutting for application of the latter thereto. The knife 7 is indirectly mounted on a support member 4 upon which moves a reciprocating carriage member 5 driven by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder 14 or by an electric motor. The tape 18 is pressed against the specimen by a vertically moving brush 29 driven by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder or by a solenoid and is fed between a supply roll 16 and a one-way rotation collecting roll 19 mounted on the carriage member, by pulley 24, rope 25 and weight 26. Rollers 32, 33 supported on a fixed post 31 and actuated by a pneumatic or hydraulic cylinder or by a solenoid 34, clamp the tape during the return stroke of the carriage member 5. The cylinder 14, brush 29 and the feeding of the tape are controlled by a control unit 38, Fig. 2 (not shown). Between cutting strokes the specimen 9 can be raised incrementally by a screw 10 and gear-wheels 11, 12 driven by a stepping motor 13. Fragments of the specimen produced during cutting are sucked through a nozzle 37 and a tube 36 by a fan (35). To enable freeze-drying of the collected specimens a roll 46 may be provided to supply a band 47, e.g. of loose net or fabric, that becomes interposed between the turns of tape 18 to permit air circulation. Micro-switches 39, 40 indicate the end positions of reciprocating member 5 and micro-switches 42, 43 the times of lowering and raising the brush 29, the switches being actuated by a cam 41. A switch 44 operated by a cam 45 determines the suction time of the fan (35). Additional switches may be provided e.g. to stop the microtome if the tape 18 breaks. The microtome may have a refrigerator (3) and be enclosed within a heat insulated casing 1.
