Abstract

1,151,040. ABS-type graft polymer compositions. KNAPSACK A.G. 27 Feb., 1968 [1 March, 1967; 4 Oct., 1967], No. 9453/68. Heading C3G. A graft polymer composition is prepared by a process wherein an elastomeric copolymer is produced in a first process step by copolymerizing a conjugated diene in aqueous emulsion at -20‹ to + 100‹ C. in contact with a catalyst and, if desired an emulsifier, with a vinyl compound consisting of acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic acid, a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl acrylate, vinyl ether, styrene, alpha-methyl styrene or a mixture of these compounds; wherein a graft polymer is produced in a second process step by grafting the elastomeric copolymer, at 0‹ to 100‹ C. in aqueous emulsion and in contact with a catalyst, with a vinyl monomer mixture comprising styrene or alpha-methyl styrene together with acrylic acid, a C 1 to C 4 -alkyl acrylate, methacrylonitrile or acrylonitrile, acrylonitrile or a derivative thereof being employed in the first or the second process step or in both of these steps; and wherein a final composition is produced in a third process step by blending the graft polymer with a copolymer based on the second step vinyl compounds, the vinyl monomer mixture used for this latter copolymer being either the same as or different from that used in the second process step; which process comprises carrying out the first step copolymerization of the diene and vinyl monomer in the presence of 0À1 to 1% by weight of catalyst and at most 0.2% of emulsifier, based on the weight of diene and vinyl monomer(s), the monomer mixture of the first step containing 1 to 30% by weight of the vinyl compound(s). In the examples, butadiene and acrylonitrile are copolymerized in an aqueous emulsion containing potassium persulphate and, optionally, 0À1% of sodium abietate. Styrene and acrylonitrile are then grafted on to the elastomer produced and the graft polymer latex is blended with a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer latex.
