1,150,590. Spinning chimney. VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT MASHIN DLYA PROIZVODSTVA SINTETICHESKIKH VOLOKON. 28 Oct., 1966, No. 48438/66. Heading B5B. Apparatus for air-stream cooling of filaments, comprises a pressure chamber 2, 3 having internally thereof a perforated conduit 8, 9 and a quenching chimney 4 inside which the filament or filaments are cooled, both said chamber and said chimney being interconnected, and said pressure chamber comprising a plenum chamber 3 and a plenum ante-chamber 2 for damping the air stream pulsation, in communication with the plenum chamber through said perforated conduit which conduit is of a variable crosssection and has perforations 10, 11 in both portions located within the plenum chamber and the plenum ante-chamber. As shown, the part 8 of the conduit in the plenum ante-chamber is of cylindrical cross-section, while the part 9 of the conduit in the plenum chamber 3 is of tapering cross-section. The perforations 11 in that portion of the conduit 9 which is inside the plenum chamber, are of variable diameter reducing towards the end remote from the plenum ante-chamber and are only provided on that portion of the surface which faces the wall of the housing 6 and away from the screens 5 separating the plenum chamber from the quenching chimney 4. The rate of feed of air into the apparatus from main 17 is controlled by an air valve which includes a coil spring 16, the compression of which may be varied by means of a lead screw 13. Filaments 18 are extruded from spinning nozzle 1 and pass downwardly through quenching chimney 4. The pulsations of the air stream supplied at 17 are damped by passage between the coils of spring 16, and further damped by passage of the air stream through the holes 10 into the cylindrical portion 8 of the conduit, the pulsations being completely baffled out by passage of the air stream through plenum chamber 3, owing to the arrangement of holes 11 of varying diameter and the variable cross-section of the conduit, and thus a uniform exhaust velocity of the air stream is attained over the entire height of quenching chimney 4. Hence filaments having a greater uniformity of denier may be obtained.
