Abstract

1,149,212. Substituted pyrimidines. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 6 July, 1966 [24 July, 1965; 28 July, 1965], No. 30383/66. Heading C2C. Compounds of the formula wherein R and R<SP>1</SP> are halogenoalkyl, an aromatic or substituted aromatic radical or an aromatic radical which is fused to heterocyclic rings and Y is oxygen or an NH group, may be obtained by reacting in one or more steps 2 mols of a cyanate of the formula ROCN with 1 mole of a nitrile of the formula NO-CH 2 -X where X is -CN or -COOR<SP>2</SP> where R<SP>2</SP> is an aliphatic or aromatic radical, at temperatures of 0-120‹ C., optionally in the presence of a base, and the reaction may be effected in an inert liquid organic medium. When the reaction is effected in two stages, 1 mole of the cyanate ROCN is reacted with 1 mole of the nitrile NC-CH 2 -X to give an intermediate of the formula which is subsequently reacted with 1 mole of a cyanate R<SP>1</SP>OCN. The malonitrile starting material (i.e. when X = CN in the above formula) may be employed in the form of one of its salts.
