An intermittent or cyclically variable ratio drive mechanism comprises coaxial input and output shafts 12, 21, gear-wheels 16, 18 secured on a layshaft 17 respectively meshing gearwheels 15, 19 on the input and output shafts respectively, the layshaft being rotatably mounted in a carrier 25 angularly movable about the axis of the shafts 12, 21, and a crankpin 29 on the layshaft rotatably engaging an arm 31 having a fixed pivot 32 in the gear casing 10. As the input shaft 12 is continuously rotated by an electric motor 14 the rotation of the crank-pin 29 with layshaft 17 causes the carrier 25 to rock back and forth to cyclically vary the velocity ratio of the drive, and hence the angular velocity of the output shaft 21. If the crank-pin 29 lies on the pitch circle of the gear 18 the output shaft will stop momentarily at regular intervals. A disc 28 carrying the crank-pin 29 may have holes at various radii to receive the crank-pin, so that the output motion may be adjusted.
