Abstract

1,148,759. Orthophosphorous acid. MONSANTO CO. 5 Oct., 1966 [7 Oct., 1965], No. 44554/66. Heading C1A. Orthophosphorous acid is prepared by oxidizing elementary phosphorus with aqueous nitric acid or an acidified aqueous solution of a watersoluble nitrate. The oxidation is carried out at 55-120‹ C., with a solution having a concentration of nitrate ions of 3 to 50% by weight. The phosphorus may be molten, or dispersed in an aqueous phase. The water soluble nitrate may be an alkali, alkaline earth, or ammonium nitrate. The acid prepared by the above process may be concentrated to greater than 80% by weight of the solution, and crystals of the acid obtained by cooling and/or seeding.
