The stroke of the piston 1 of an hydraulic piston-cylinder shock absorber is limited by a stop 7 formed by making indentations 6 in the cylinder wall. As depicted in Figs. 2 and 3 (not shown), these indentations are three in number and are elongate, their major dimensions extending circumferentially of the cylinder 3. The shock absorber shown is of the kind in which the cylinder 3 communicates with an annular reservoir 5 surrounding it, by way of a foot valve (not shown).
