Abstract

1,147,864. Electromagnetic indicating apparatus; magnetic monogrammatic signs. FERRANTI Ltd. 17 July, 1967 [18 July, 1966], No. 32705/67. Headings G4F and G5C. An electromagnetic indicator comprises a rotatable member having two contrasting surfaces of similar size arranged at an angle not more than 120 degrees to each other and magnetic field forming means for rotating the member by an amount not more than 60 degrees each side of the normal to the field so as to display one or other surface. In Fig. 2 a rotatable indicating element 44 is pivoted between ears 18 and is permanently magnetized across its width. If a magnetic field is set up laterally of the indicator support 18 the element will remain in the position shown (at 45 degrees to the field) or revolve to the other 45 degrees position depending on the direction of the field, so that one or other of the contrasting surfaces 40, 42 is exposed. In Fig. 1 a number of such indicators are arranged in figure-of-eight formationandthemagnetic field is produced between pairs of pins 32 by electromagnets 34, 36 which clip thereon. By selectively operating the indicators, numerals may be displayed and if diagonal elements are also provided (Fig. 6, not shown) letters may also be formed.
