Abstract

1,012,850. Indicator assemblies; selectivesignalling systems. PATENT BUTTON CO. Sept. 23, 1964 [Sept. 23, 1963; Feb. 12, 1964], No. 38846/64. Headings G5C and G4H. Apparatus for displaying any one of a number of preselected characters, such as the numerals 0-9, comprises a group of units each enclosed in a housing 10 and including a circular stator 20 of magnetically conductive material but containing no permanent magnets, and a rotor comprising a cylindrical character display surface 25 connected with a permanent magnet 35. Electromagnets 23 mounted on pins 21 are at least equal in number to the number of preselected characters and are disposed around the stator so that no two are in diametric opposition. The electromagnets comprise coils, each of which has one end connected to a common terminal 41 and the other end to independent terminals 40, whereby a source of power such as a battery 43 can be selectively connected to any one of the coils to attract one pole of the magnet 35 thereto and so cause the surface 25 to rotate and display the associated character through a window 13. To avoid excessive oscillation before the magnet 35 comes to rest and to prevent it from movement if the apparatus is knocked, an eccentric magnet having a pivot nearer one pole than the other, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2, may be used.
