Abstract

1,147,794. Grabs for lifting nuclear fuel elements. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. 18 Nov., 1966 [19 Nov., 1965], No. 49238/65. Heading B8H. A grabhead for use in nuclear reactors has jaws 16 which are opened by a plunger 21 which is depressed by a rod 23 when a solenoid 30, of similar construction to that described in Specification 1,056,412, is energized. When the solenoid is de-energized a spring 22 raises the plunger 21 and the jaws are closed. Projections 18, 19 on the jaws engage cam faces on the plunger 21. If an arm 50A of an emergency lever 50 is pushed inwards a forked arm 50B depresses the plunger 21 and opens the jaws. A supply cable for the solenoid runs through a lifting rope 40 which may be of the kind described in Specification 1,081,487. The position of the solenoid may be deduced by measuring the iron loss therein. This can be done by applying an A.C. voltage to the solenoid and measuring the current. Radial fins 13D align the grabhead within the fuel channels of a nuclear reactor.
