Abstract
1,225,073. Coaxial cable for radioactive environments. COMMISSARIAT A L'ERERGIE ATOMIQUE. 3 Oct., 1969 [10 Oct., 1968], No. 48811/69. Heading H1A. A coaxial cable for use in regions of high radiation density has an outer sheath made up of lead or lead oxide sandwiched between concentric cylinders of stainless steel, an insulator comprising a mixture of alumina and magnesia, and a conductive core made of iron, nickel or stainless steel. The proportion of alumina to magnesia in the insulator, and the dimensions and materials of the sheath and core are so chosen that under conditions of steady irradiation the sheath and core are not readily activated by neutrons, and the deactivation reactions in the materials of the cable do not lead to any nett current in it. To avoid excessive transients when irradiation ceases, magnesia or magnesium metal may be added to the material of the core.
