Abstract

1,147,713. Cleaning ceramics. CLOUGHS ROYAL ART POTTERY Ltd. 19 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4050/67. Heading C1H. A machine for sponging ceramic articles during their manufacture comprises a sponging device 18 of sponge or sponge-like material having a working surface intersected by a pattern of cuts. As shown, the sponging device 18 is in the form of an endless belt which is mounted on a backing 20 and trained over a plurality of rollers 14, 15, 16 and 17. The roller 15 is rotatably driven so that the incised surface of the belt moves cyclically into cleaning engagement with a ceramic article 13 mounted on a rotatable chuck 12, through a water bath 11 and then into engagement with an adjustable roller 22 which is mounted for wringing purposes. The tension in the belt is adjusted by suitably positioning the roller 17 and engagement between the article 13 and belt 18 is ensured by arranging that the belt 18 and chuck 12 are relatively movable towards and away from each other.
