Abstract

1,271,446. Sponging ceramics. SERVICE (ENGS) Ltd. 25 Sept., 1970 [27 Sept., 1969], No. 47633/69. Heading C1H. A machine for smoothing the edges of ceramic ware W before firing comprises two sponge belts 16 and 18 which are driven in opposite directions with the plane of one belt disposed at an acute angle, e.g. 45 degrees, to the plane of the other belt and means for moving the belts towards the ceramic ware so that the belts can simultaneously smooth the edges of the ceramic ware as it is rotated on a work support (not shown). The belts suitable have their operative surfaces constituted by a plurality of spaced apart longitudinal ribs. The belts can either dip into water baths 50 and 52 following which they are squeezed by the rollers 60 or they can be sprayed with water. Adjusting screws 66 and 68 move the rollers 22 to enable each belt to bear on the edge of the ceramic ware at the desired angle. A tension device 70, 71 enables the roller 26 to keep each belt under tension. The rollers supporting the belts 16 and 18 are fixed to two vertical sides 12 and 14 on a horizontal base-plate 10. Figs. 4 and 5 show how a pneumatic cylinder 86 serves to move the plate 10 towards the ceramic ware. Fig. 1 shows how A motor driven pinion 38 drives the two belts via bevel gears 40 and 41 to rotate the belts in opposite directions and at different speeds if required.
