Abstract

1,147,632. Crimped nylon fibres. COURTAULDS Ltd. 20 July, 1966 [21 April, 1965], No. 16712/65. Heading B5B. Crimped nylon fibres are made by forming an undrawn nylon fibre, drawing it while it is cooled to a temperature not greater than minus 20‹ C. and allowing the fibres so drawn to relax whereby crimp is automatically developed therein. The fibre is suitably drawn while it is in contact with solid carbon dioxide, or in contact with a metal or ceramic surface which is cooled by solid carbon dioxide, e.g. a metal plate or snubbing pin. The fibre may be pre-tensioned before drying. Additionally, the supply package of yarn may itself be cooled to a low temperature prior to drawing. For nylon 6 fibres in contact with solid carbon dioxide at about minus 50‹ C. to minus 70‹ C., drawing to give an increase in length of from 100 to 300% may be used. Cooling by other means e.g. liquid air or liquid nitrogen may also be used as may an electrical Peltier cooling element. In an example, a bundle of nylon 6 fibres is pre-tensioned and then drawn to a draw ratio of 2.5: 1 while passing over a cold plate consisting of a metal box filled with solid carbon dioxide and having a recess running vertically along the face through which the fibres are passed. Fibres from the second draw roller were collected on a bobbin. When the tension was released filaments immediately assumed a helical crimp. A similar type of fibre was obtained using a draw ratio of 2À75: 1.
