Abstract

1,147,443. Casting machines and processes. HILGER & WATTS Ltd. 9 May, 1966 [20 May, 1965], No. 21478/65. Heading B3F [Also in Divisions G2 and H5] A sample of material to be analysed by a spark discharge spectrograph is prepared with a flat surface by placing the material into a cavity 14 in a plate 6 forming a first electrode of an arc furnace 2 having an argon atmosphere and after the material has melted a pressure member or die 36 carried by a bracket 34 on a member 18 is suddenly lowered. The die 36 has a relatively large mass and high thermal conductivity so that it causes rapid solidification of the sample to produce a small metallic grain structure. The second electrode of the furnace 2 projects downwardly from a side arm 22 on member 18 so that by rotating the member 18 by a link 32 the electrode and the die 36 may be brought alternately over the cavity 14 and the member 18 raised or lowered by a link 30. A series of cavities 14 may be provided in the plate 6 which is rotatable on an annular bearing 8.
