1,146,497. Photopolymerizable compositions. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 June, 1966 [3 June, 1965; 3 Sept., 1965], No. 24690/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G2] Photopolymerizable compositions comprise a uniform mixture of (a) an addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one terminal ethylenic group, having a boiling point above 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure, and capable of forming a polymer by photoinitiated addition polymerization, and (b) an addition polymerization initiator combination of (1) a compound capable of being photochemically excited, and (2) an organic bromine donor compound that produces free radicals upon being initiated by compound b(1). The compositions may also contain (c) a polymeric binding agent that forms solid, coherent films, (d) an amine containing an amino group, the nitrogen atom of which is not bonded directly to a ring atom of an aromatic ring, and which is liquid or solid at 25‹ C. at atmospheric pressure, and (e) a compound capable of losing a hydrogen atom to the initiator when the latter is activated photochemically. Component b(1) may be a mono- or poly-methine photographic sensitizing dye or a photoreducible dye; b(2) may be a mono- or poly-bromoparaffin, a bromo-nitrile, -carboxylic acid or -ketone, 4-bromo-N,N-dimethylaniline, N-(2-bromoethyl)-phthalimide, N-(3-bromopropyl)-phthalimide, 6-bromopiperonal or N-bromosuccinimide (several other examples are also disclosed) and may, if desired, be used in conjunction with a chlorine atom donor compound; (c) may be a thermoplastic polymer such as a copolyester, polyamide, vinylidene chloride copolymer or cellulose ester; (d) may be an alkylamine, alkylene diamine, alkanolamine, or an aliphatic polyamine (see Specification 905,700); (e) may be an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl alcohol, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester, amine or amide. Specified as polymerizable component (a) are triethylene glycol diacrylate, pentaerythritol triacrylate, lauryl methacrylate and polymers containing pendant acrylate or allyloxy groups. The compositions can optionally contain polymerization inhibitors, fillers or reinforcing agents, e.g. organophilic silicas, bentonites, silica and powdered glass, pigments and dyes which serve solely as colouring agents.
