Abstract

1,146,498. Photopolymerizable compositions. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 June, 1966 [3 June, 1965; 3 Sept., 1965], No. 24691/66. Heading C3P. [Also in Division G2] Photopolymerizable compositions comprise a uniform mixture of (a) an addition polymerizable ethylenically unsaturated compound having at least one terminal ethylenic group, having a boiling point above 100‹ C. at atmospheric pressure, and capable of forming a polymer by photo-inititiated addition polymerization, and (b) an addition polymerization initiator combination of (1) at least one monomethine or polymethine photographic sensitizing dye, the dye molecules being capable of being photochemically excited, and (2) an amine containing an amino group, the nitrogen atom of which is not bonded directly to a ring atom of an aromatic ring, and which is liquid or solid at 25‹ C. at atmospheric pressure. The compositions may also contain (c) a polymeric binding agent that forms solid coherent films and/or (d) a compound capable of losing a hydrogen atom to the initiator when the latter is activated by actinic radiation. Component (b)(1) may be a cyanine, carbocyanine, azacyanine, merocyanine or styryl dye; (b)(2) may be an alkylamine, alkylene diamine, alkanolamine, a dimethylaminoethyl methacrylatemethylmethacrylate copolymer (see Example III), or an aliphatic polyamine (see Specification 905,700); (c) may be a thermoplastic polymer such as a copolyester, polyamide, vinylidene chloride copolymer or cellulose, ester; (d) may be a polyethylene glycol, an alkyl or alkoxyalkyl alcohol, ether, aldehyde, ketone, carboxylic acid, ester, amine or amide. The unsaturated compound (a) may be pentaerythritol triacrylate, triethylene glycol diacrylate, dodecyl methacrylate or a polymeric compound containing pendant acrylate, methacrylate or allyloxy groups. The compositions can optionally contain polymerization inhibitors, fillers or reinforcing agents, pigments, and dyes which serve solely as colouring agents.
