Abstract
1,146,474. Hydroxy esters. BP CHEMICALS (U.K.) Ltd. 16 May, 1967 [10 June, 1966], No. 25860/66. Heading C2C. [Also in Division C3] Glycidyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acids of 4-27 carbon atoms are reacted, in the presence of a polymerization inhibitor, with a monoethylenically unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid so as to form a hydroxy ester of said unsaturated acid. In examples, the glycidyl ester is the commercial product " Cardura " E (Trade Mark), whose acid component is a mixture of C 9 -C 11 branched-chain aliphatic carboxylic acids; the unsaturated acid reactant is acrylic, maleic or itaconic acid, the latter two acids forming di-(hydroxyesters); and the inhibitor is hydroquinone. The hydroxy-esters are used for preparing addition copolymers (see Division C3).
