Abstract

1,145,811. Bearings. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 18 May, 1967 [23 May, 1966], No. 22899/66. Heading F2A. A machine comprises a shaft in a sleeve, the shaft being movable axially by means of a ram, pressurized-fluid being provided between the shaft and the sleeve and between the shaft and the ram. In an embodiment, a form measuring machine for movably adjusting a workpiece or a stylus has a table 1 with levelling gear fitted to an upper end 2 of a vertical shaft 3 which is supported by an air bearing in a cylindrical sleeve 4, and is axially-adjusted by means of a ram 5 attached thereto. The shaft 3 is counterbalanced by means of a spring 22 on a reel 23, and is rotated by means of an electric motor 9, via gears 8, 7 and 6, the latter being a ring mounted on the ram 5. The gear-ring 6 drives the shaft 3 by means of a pin 25 and fork 26 coupling. Pressurized-air is supplied from a supply-pipe 14 to an annular space 13 formed between the sleeve 4 and a housing 10 and is passed, through radial bores 11 containing jewel restrictors 12, to the clearance between the shaft 3 and the sleeve 4. Sealing is effected by means of washers 16 and an annular cover 17. The clearance between the end of the shaft 3 and a thrust-plate 18 connected to the ram is supplied with pressurized air through a duct 19 in a bearing 20, the duct 19 being provided with a jewel restrictor 21.
