Abstract

1,145,756. Castors. ARCHIBOLD KENRICK & SONS Ltd. 23 Jan., 1968 [28 Oct., 1966], No. 48341/66 Heading A4U. In a castor, particularly for beds and trolleys, the wheel 21 in normal position of use, is braked by contact with a flange 2 of the member 1 which secures the castor in a housing 18 of the bed &c. A lever 10 for release of the brake has a pivoted foot pedal 13, the lever being pivoted by a link 14 to the member 1, and at 8 to a bush 5 which is guided at 22 for axial sliding in the direction of the castor spindle 4. Downward pressure on the limb 31 of the pedal raises the member 1 relatively to the spindle, the bush being depressed against the action of a spring 3, to disengage the flange 2 from the castor wheel. A spring- urged catch 9 pivoted at 25 on the lever has a hook 26 to engage a pin 27 to retain the castor in unlocked position until released by foot pressure on the limb 32 of the pedal. The castor may include a swivel member which is simultaneously locked by application of the brake. The nut 6 is tightened on the spindle while the bed is empty so that the weight of the occupant compresses the spring to provide resilience when the bed is in use and the shoulder 33 engages the bush 5 in conditions of overload to prevent inadvertent application of the brake.
