Abstract
1,145,659. Amino anthraquinones. FARBENFABRIKEN BAYER A.G. 14 July, 1967 [19 July, 1966], No. 32545/67. Heading C4P. Amino anthraquinones are obtained by reduction of the corresponding nitroanthraquinones in an aqueous H 2 SO 4 medium having a sulphuric acid concentration of 0-5 to 80% by weight at a pH below 3, using SO 2 in a quantity of 3 to 10 moles per nitro group per mole of nitro compound in the presence of 0.0001 to 0-2 mol. of a catalyst for the reduction per mol. of nitro compound, and at a temperature of from 30‹ to 250‹ C. and isolating the resulting aminoanthraquinone from the reaction mixture. Specified catalysts are HI, metal salts of the elements of Group IV and sub-Groups I, II, IV, V, VI and VIII of the Periodic Table of changeable valency, and I or iodine compounds which are capable of forming HI under the reaction conditions. Examples are given for the production of aminoanthraquinones.
