Abstract

1,145,412. Coating cores by extrusion. INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ELECTRIC CORP. 22 Feb., 1968 [24 Feb., 1967], No. 8748/68. Heading B5A. In the extrusion coating of a cable or conductor with rubber or thermosetting resin, the core is coated by an extruder 4, and the coated core is drawn through a vertical tube 5, a curved tube 8 and a substantially horizontal tube 7, the composite tube containing steam under pressure above level 6 to form a vulcanization zone and water under pressure below this level to form a cooling zone. The core is drawn initially from a spool 1, around sheave 2 and capstan 3, and the coated core is hauled off by a capstan or, as shown, caterpillars 9 to a takeup spool 10. Angle 11 is preferably in the range 75-105 degrees and the inner surface of curved tube 8 is made sufficiently smooth so that internal guide means are unnecessary. The above arrangement allows a relatively short length of vertical tube 5, e.g. one-fifth of the length, to be used for cooling.
