1,145,344. Oxidation of gaseous halides to oxides. FABRIQUES DE PRODUCTS CHIMIQUES DE THANN ET DE MULHOUSE. 3 Aug., 1966 [3 Aug., 1965; 10 June, 1966]. No. 34843/66. Heading C1A. In the preparation of oxides of Ti, Zr, Si, Al and Fe, a vaporized chloride, bromide, or iodide, together with an excess of an O 2 containing gas is fed into the reaction chamber shown from a nozzle 5 whilst a combustible gas such as CO, at a temperature below that in the reaction zone 8 is passed through perforations which amount to at least 2% of the area of the wall 1 to confine the reaction between the halide and O 2 to a zone 8 spaced away from the walls of the reaction chamber. The apparatus shown comprises an outer cylinder 3 and a perforated inner cylinder 1 which may be made of steel, nickel or aluminium and may be in the form of a perforated sheet, a grid of fused bars or a mesh and preferably has at least 30% of its area as perforations through which the gas can pass with only a slight pressure drop. The annular space between the two cylinders is divided by a partition 4 into two zones into the first of which the combustible gas is fed and into the second of which an inert gas, such as recycled product gas after removal of the oxide, is fed to cool the reacted mixture. A similar apparatus has two partitions dividing the annular space into three zones; these partitions and the base being provided with cooling water jackets. Examples describe the preparation of rutile, which may be modified by oxidizing aluminium or silicon halides along with titanium tetrachloride.
