Abstract
1,145,244. Monitoring radio navigation systems. MINISTER OF TECHNOLOGY. 12 Jan., 1968 [27 Jan., 1967], No. 4158/67. Heading H4D. A system for monitoring the signals from the localizer transmitter 7 of an I.LS. (instrument landing system) installation includes a series of spaced apart aerials which extend away from the approach end of a runway 1. The aerials 3, 4, 5, 6 may be located along an extension of the runway centre-line 2, where the difference of depth of modulation (D.D.M.) is nominally zero, or, as shown at 3<SP>1</SP>, 4<SP>1</SP>, 5<SP>1</SP>, 6<SP>1</SP>, along a line where the D.D.M. has a nominally constant value exceeding zero. The aerials are placed at heights which increase with distance from the runway, and their outputs are connected through equalizing pads to a diode or other type of switch which repeatedly samples them in turn (Fig. 2, not shown). The output of the switch is connected through an I.L.S. receiver to a recorder. If the speed of scanning is sufficiently high, average values of D.D.M. are recorded but if it is low, individual values of D.D.M. at the aerials are recorded.
