Abstract

1,144,362. Bearings. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. 20 April, 1967 [20 April, 1966], No. 17297/66. Heading F2A. A bearing assembly comprises a ball or taper roller bearing between outer and inner members 10, 11, a part 18 within the inner member 11 having a surface inclined to the bearing axis, balls 15 engaging said surface and extending through apertures in the inner member, so that axial movement of part 18 adjusts the bearing axially. In Fig. 1 there are two bearings, and the balls 15 engage the inner races 23. The inclined surface is on a shaft screw-threaded to the inner member 11 at one end, and having a cylindrical portion 21 bearing against inner member 11 at the other end. To remove end play and preload the bearings shaft 18 is screwed into member 11 so that balls 15 are displaced radially outwardly and races 23 axially outwardly, movement of the bearings being limited by circlips 17. Three balls 15 are used. In Fig. 3 (not shown), collars 25 are interposed between the balls 15 and inner races.
