Locks, revolving - barrel; keys.-In a lock of the type in which the key is provided with an expansible member by which it is adapted to be connected frictionally to a rotary barrel, the barrel must be moved laterally before it can be rotated to operate the bolt. The key, Fig. 5, comprises a cylindrical member 13 working in a sleeve member 14, and an expansible member in the form of a split ring 21, Fig. 7, disposed between a collar 22 and a flange 23 on the sleeve member, the members 13, 14 being provided with handles 13<a>, 14<a> respectively. In operation, the key is inserted into a recess 5, Fig. 2, in the barrel 4, and the handles are pressed together, thereby rotating a cylinder 19 mounted in the sleeve 14 and forcing open the ends of the ring 21, so as to place the key into frictional engagement with the barrel; one end of the cylinder 19 is elliptical in cross-section and engages between the ends of the ring, and a pin 18 on the cylinder 19 engages in a slot 17 in the member 13. The barrel 4 is first pulled forward against the action of a spring 8 to withdraw a projection 9 clear of a recess 10 in the casing 1<a>, and is then rotated to operate the bolt, projections on the barrel co-operating with teeth on the bolt. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 15, the cylinder 19 is dispensed with, the member 13 being provided with a cam disk 13b co-operating with balls 13<c> contained in pockets 13d in a part 13<e> secured to the member 14, the balls serving to press the ring outwardly into engagement with the barrel.
