Abstract

114,366. Hoffmann, R. E. June 9, 1917. Casings.-Swirling or vortex action of the water in the suction chamber is prevented by the insertion of perforated or slotted grids or plates. These plates may be of various forms adapted to the form of the pump casing. The holes may be of Venturi, vena contracta, or similar form, and the total area is so large as not to throttle the inlet. Fig. 2 shows a multistage pump with conical grids A in the main inlet and a flat grid B between the first two stages.
