Solutions of metal carboxylates are prepared by reacting an oxide, hydroxide or carbonate of Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Zn, Cd and/or divalent Pb with an unsaturated fatty acid, an alocyclic carboxylic acid, an aralkyl or alkaryl carboxylic acid, α-ethyl-hexanoic acid, a branched organic carboxylic acid with a quaternary carbon atom in the α-position, a naphthenic acid, a resin acid and/or caproic acid, which acid is liquid at 25‹ C., at an elevated temperature in the absence of a catalyst and using an excess of the acid reactant at least sufficient for dissolving all of the metal carboxylate formed, the water of reaction being continuously removed by distillation. The products are thin-flowing solutions, preferably containing 50% or more by wt. of metal salt, which are used as stabilizers for halogen-containing polymers. Examples relate to the preparation of Pb di-α-ethylhexanoate, Cd α-ethylhexanoate, Sr naphthenate, Pb oleate/α-ethyl-hexanoate, Ca C 6-30 carboxylate and Zn di-α-ethylhexanoate.
